To The Virgins, Make Much of Time
I really like this poem, because it really gets across the concept of "carpe diem". It uses virgins as a illustration for those who have not yet experienced everything life offers. This doesn't necessarily mean however to go out and be crazy. There is a distinct difference between doing what makes you happy, and being happy with what you are doing. I think the correct concept for one to live by would be "carpe diem", because it's not about enjoying the moment, it's about enjoying life as a whole, with each moment included. However, it get's difficult to live by this concept because we all get caught up in wanting instant gratification, meaning if there is something we need to do in order to prepare or advance in our future that we may not enjoy at the moment, we get greedy and pessimistic and unhappy with it. I think our society needs to fully understand the idea of "carpe diem", and if everyone in the world did that, we may get along better regardless of our beliefs. Yeah this was kind of off the topic of the poem but I guess this can be considered a free write...or free type...lol :P

I think it is right in line with the poem and it's exploration of the need to seize the day. I like what you say about instant gratification and how we need to look at life as a whole instead of focusing on just what will make us happy in the moment.
ReplyDeleteI guess my only question to this, is would we all get along? You mentioned in the second to last line that we would all get along regardless of what we believed. But isn't it true that what I believe has a direct relationship with what I do? I know that you may say that you and I seizing the day PROBABLY wouldn't step on one another toes, but think of those who believe incredibly 'different' beliefs. EX. An extremist of a religion, going and 'seizing the day' by working incredibly hard to create a bomb that would be used to blow up the U.S capital. To him, he is doing his very best to succeed at what he feels is important. He also is seizing the day by MAKING THE MOST with what he can. His beliefs tell him that what he is doing is not only right, but HOLY, wouldn't these actions effect us???? Wouldn't these actions make us not get along better, but rather tear our country apart? Maybe some of us are "Lazy" and live more towards the 'instant gratification' ways of life because that is there 'place in this world'. Maybe those few lazy people are what makes the world spin 'round.
