CHRISTMAS BREAK!!!

Good luck everyone on reading all the way to chapter 18 during break. It'll be tough because I am busy much of the time as are many of you probably. It'll be nice to have a longer break off of school, though. Merry Christmas!!!

Frankenstein

Who is William? It makes it a little confusing because Elizabeth was adopted but calls her parents aunt and uncle and the others her cousin. I know that Victor had another brother but isn't his brother Ernest? I have only so far read through chapter 7 but I find it odd that the monster that Victor made would go and murder William.

MRS.STARIHA

...please don't leave ...=(
i really enjoy having you as a teacher and i'm gonna miss you for the rest of brit lit B.
Merry Christmas and hope everything goes well with your baby (:

promitheous

The picture of promitheous makes me feel tourmented and sad because of the pain and suffering the man is in which relfects how mean and cruel the human society can be to each other. By the focus of the painting being on him it conveys a feeling of unnecessary punishment that he was actually not that bad of a guy. Also by stripping him down to nothing but nakedness it is taking away all his humility and making him feel ashamed as the dark background behind him provides a bird that is about to eat him alive, he looks like he is consented to being tourtured like this so its like the weak being preyed on by the strong. sadd commentary on society even if it came from a myth

12/14

The romantic era has influenced modern day society because we have higher "idealistic" expectations for things like life, love, money, and that we should always be happy. People dream about having it all and being super rich and perfect family, romance, and kids, when in reality, none of that ever really comes true. Everyone has hardships in there life that we must overcome, its not all fantasy. we also have unrealistic expectations that you must fufill or your not beautiful like having a perfect body, personaity, and all together flawless which has lead to anoriexia and many other psychological issues that people have formed because of their lack of "perfection" which is unrealistic.

Snowflake

A snowflake teaches us how everyone is different because there are no two snowflakes alike and how everyone in their differences us unique and beautiful and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Snow is also related with happy times like chirstmas and other holidays and winter activties like snow men (: It sets a mood of cold harsh times but being comfortable in your house with a warm fire .. also snow is white which signifies purity of somesort and innocence which is ironic because of all the problems it causes like car crash and snow in, and snow days, but everyone loves snowdays so thats finding the good in the maybe not so great because snow can be a pain in the neck!... but i like it (:

Frankenstein

After reading the first two chapters the first thing that came to mind was that mary shelly was telling a story to her two friends about a man telling a story. It was sort of confusing to me the concept of this. And why was victor on a ice flow, all by himself? Im sure as we finish the story we will find out the reason he is there.

She Walks in Beautly Like the Night

For some reason my computer does not allow me to comment and I was not able to do this at school so here is my response...(:

The images that Byron uses in this poem is that of the night and the skies. The sky can bring so many different feelings. The stars in the sky show that there is more out there than we think and just a glance at night doesn't always clearly show beauty. We sometimes have to look deeper into not only night, but life. Normally, when a person thinks of night, darkness and danger come to mind. Byron suggests that its more than that.

A simile in this poem was the very first line. "She walks in beauty like the night." This shows that night does have beauty like a woman. Also, the woman was wearing a dark black gown. This shows that although she wore something dark like night, beauty was still evident. A metaphor is also shown through the first line in the use of the night. Beauty and night seem sometimes to be totally different, but in reality are much the same. The night is very dark and mysterious like that of a woman and love. When walking in the dark, many times without light, you don't know where you are going. This is the same with love. When you find someone, you cannot predict what will happen in the future, you can only hope and keep going.

This poem captures the romantic spirit because it compares the beauty of the woman to that of the night and nature itself. Sometimes the significance of nature is not evident right away so one must use knowledge and learn from nature. The last line says "A heart whose love is innocent!" This shows that the woman has a good heart and that you can find good anywhere, even in the night. Although the woman may be mysterious and sometimes appear to have darkness in her, her intentions are good and her love is innocent.

airplanes

I never realized how songs could have so much meaning behind them, and even though people say "rap" or "hip hop" is ridiculous, there can be songs that have much meaning behind them and are very intelligent and satirical and can show a lot of societal issues we have in our world today and how we all left life fly by and we can't wait for this, or can't wait for that.. and it just really is amazing if you sit back and listen to lyrics and make out what there referring to and the metaphores they use to compare different relations and see how ridiculous the world is today, and how you have to make time for everything and how techonologically advanced the world is and it is taking over the world and in reality making us lazier and dumbing us down and makes us rely on so much.

romantic era

i think this should be an interesting era because we will learn how life explores outside the box and not following the crowd and you can gather your own ideas and information about nature and different subjects, and the beauty of everything, even underneath disaster.

this was a good era for our world in a whole because throughout school and your education, they don't ready you and prepare you for what life is really like, and what we will have to face and the challenges we will have to conquer.. this era helps us prepare for reality outside of education and highschool and after on what life is like and what we will have to do and face. our education is very important and valued in todays society, but we can't focus all of us on education because when you get in the real world you have to actually make decisions and ready yourself for what life is going to throw at you, and situations you will be stuck in, and no ones going to teach you that.. i would value the beauty of nature over education because i feel you learn more about living which is more imporant to live a good life rather than worry about past events and things that in the end won't be needed or won't matter.

Frankenstien

I have read the first letter in the novel and i am confused. I was not really sure what they are talking about. I am also worried about having to read the whole novel with the confusing language. The amount of words on each page is also concerning me because it will take forever to read.

She Walks in Beauty Like the Night--Lord Byron

Read the poem She Walks in Beauty again, p.690.  Answer the following questions in your comments:
  1. What are the dominate natural images used by Byron and why are those images effective (or ineffective) for his subject matter?
  2. Discuss at least two metaphors or similes and what they add to the poem.
  3. How does this poem capture the Romantic spirit?

Test

I didnt think the test was going to bad because i actually understood most of the stories we read. But while taking the test i was confused because it seemed like we were questioned more on the stories we didnt discuss as much than the ones we talked about a lot. I still think i did ok and hope i get a good grade.

THE BUTTER BATTLE (:

welll to start off that was like awesome how we got to lay on the desks while being read a doctor suess book it reminded me of nap time (:
but anyways the butter battle book is and example of dark satire because it reflected on the circumstances of the time, the cold war with the constant addition of more and more dangerous weapons that were used more as threats then actually to hurt, just to scare the other country and then the fact of fighting over such trivial issues like how a group butters their bread!

INFANTS SORROW

this poem was really strange to me like when you think of childbirth you think of innocence and bringing joy and happiness but instead it made the mom and dad sad? but i guess its actually talking about how the poor class is like that because it talks about feeling trapped and the poor were trapped in their social status

Airplanes

The song airplanes makes a social commentary by saying things have gotten so bad that even partying and everything looses its temptation and people are so desperate for a way out of todays messed up world that they would wish upon an airplane if a shooting star wasnt present this also demonstrates how materialistic our world is because airplanes are man made vs. shooting stars which is nature.

Class discussion

my quote was from The Tiger page 611, line 20.
"Did he who made the lamb make thee?"
This caught my eye because it questions creation. The tiger was seen to be evil while the lamb was seen as good. We start questioning is good and evil created by the same thing. They are total opposites and it seems as if our world has been made of opposites and you can find good and evil but also find evil in good.

Dr. Seuss freewrite

The ironic thing about this book is that it is for children. The fact it is for children also makes it satire because war is made out to be almost play-like, immature, and childish. The language is very jubenile, but the overall theme is very dark. The two sides are going to war for nothing really and it is somewhat ridiculous. Both sides believe that they are right and we only hear the story through one of the sides. This is very similar to today because many times we make decisions or judgements before we hear both sides of the story. The end is mysterious and I believe either both sides either died or they came to an agreement and there was peace because either way, they were both going to lose because one side would come up with technology that was advanced and find that the other side had also.

Airplanes lyrics freewrite

It shows how many people in society aren't happy with what they have and always want something more. Life is much more complicated than it used to be. Less people are conservative and more and more are partying. Nowadays money is so important and we almost idolize it and idolize other materialistic items. Sometimes we wish we could go back to when nothing mattered and life had no stress.

my one thing..

all this new technology is getting to our head,
thats why the united states is so obeise because everyone's in bed.
their laptops, their ipods, there cell phones. over used.
the fast food, mcdonalds, burger king, and taco bell. abused.
alcohol and weed, kids have problems these days.
thats why obama is trying new things and different ways.
our education is very important to have a stable career.
maybe all the pressure is driving kids to fear.
the economy is failing and we have to bring it up,
its on our generation to make our economy tough.
so to say the least just try your best,
because everything in life just seems to be a test.

Gullive's Travels

This has to be my favorite reading so far out of all we have read. The idea of far away lands where there are people 6 inches tall and others where men are 12 times taller than a normal man. From reading it i find a sense of size and tolerance, it seems the smaller people are all wrapped in war, and use his height and strength as a weapon. But it he hadn't said enough than the would have used him to take over all of the short people on both sides. Then later he travels and comes across the taller people. They are so at peace, they listened to all he had to tell about his home land then called them "... the most pernicious race of little odious vermin that nature ever suffered to craw upon the surface to the earth." then he tried to tell him the composition of gun powder and he was told he might want to keep that to himself. It was destructive and to them uncivilized. It made me think that the shorter you get the more destructive your nature. Like little mice just fighting for survival.

Infant Sorrow

what really grabbed my attention was the use of past tense in the first stanza "my mother groaned, my father wept". I think i was a story of the past how he was helpless to his fathers power. It was just his way of showing the oppression that people were under in that time. How that the church had power over all the people and there was nothing that they could do about it.

Infant Sorrow

This peom is sad. It show that poor people and kids didn't really have much at all. Another child meant another mouth to feed and cloth. Back then it was hard if you didn't have money. Without money you couldn't survive like you should of. You get what you can and then you deal with it.

rape of lock

I didn't really understand this story it was very confusing, but i guess it was about hair and how a guy wanted to cut off some of this girls hair. Well when i read it i didn't get any of that out of it. I think that the rhyming through confused me. This story was confusing and i don't understand the meaning behind it.

rape of lockkk.

this was a confusing story, and the rhyming made it hard to concentrate on the meaning of the story. what i got out of it was that she was going to give him a lock of her hair to show that she liked him and that they had feelings for eachother.. ?

Rape of lock

this poem story thing was pretty confusing which is understandable because it was 10 pages long and all in rhymes, but i think i got the general jist of the story about a girl named belinda who is warned about a bad thing that will happen to her and then she goes to this party thing and this guy, the baron, is determined to take a lock of her hair and when he cuts it she gets reallllly pissed!
weird story though.

poem (:

haha mrs. stariha i guess i finally got a poem , ehh its still bad but waaay better then nothing, right ?(:

people these days
messed up in many ways
we've lost substantial values
people have become so shallow
it's all about what pleases us
like money, drugs, and forbidden lust
obama says its time for a change
apparently that was just for the fame
we've lost all drive
replaced with selfish pride
text, tweet, talk all day
while the world fades away

how the world has changed..

The world has changed from 300 years ago because it has become more technologically advanced and dependent which has in turn created many inventions that change the way life is with the help of automobiles, Internet, and phones. The world has also become a more "i want it now" society, along with that mental attitude people's outlook towards life and decency has been wildly change because subjects like sex, drugs and alcohol have become more common subjects and aspects of life and the common courtisey, mannors, and proper etiquett have been lost. However some thing have changed for the better, like the abolishment of slavery which has lead to abolishment of racisim and also giving woman rights. The addition of immgration also has brought along many changes to the world because america became a melting pot because people came from all over the world and brought their cultures and customes especially during the gold rush in california where people rushed to come to try to find gold and make a living for their familys. More violence is assepted too beacause of video games and the changed view on life and whats right or wrong this confusion stems from the change of religious importance where america used to be known as the nation under God and now in todays society there is a lack of any religous values at all because off the melting pot bringing in so many different religions into one area politics think its better to altogether eliminate religion as to not upset any one religion.

My Poem

Our economy is failin
We're in a recession
But what do we value?
Nothin' but possessions
We got drugs, alcohol, and money
And don't really care
Or put forth our best
This is not real rare
So what happened to education?
Technology has fried our brains
We sit on the couch
It's pretty insane
There's this new generation
Of cell phones and music
And we got a lot of drama
It's cuz of that Obama
So what should we do?
Now I'm askin' you
We're a new generation
Let's bring in change
To reach a destination
Come together, act as one
Our battle has just begun

The Rape of Lock

This reading was really weird. I really didn't like it at all. The whole thing was about a guy trying to cut a piece of a woman's hair. It was just not normal. The way Pope wrote the story I didn't get it at all. All the rhyming didn't help. It was a really boring story!!

Best day ever

today in class was probably one of easiest days we will have in this class, it was not stressful at all. Even though we read the rape of the lock. about that poem it was so hard to comprehend with the ryming and how it spoke. I had no clue it was about the man trying to cut off the womens lock of hair.

Poem

In the free world
we aspirt for riches in our livelihood
over run by drugs and violence
aboma has his time in office
in this new world full of pollution
and overpopulated by urbanization
we live our lives

The Lamb- Blake

I think The Lamb commented on how people of that time did not particularly focus on religion, rather, themselves. They started to get big headed because of science and started to iodolize science more than God. "Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?" is a line that particulary stuck out to me. It reminds humans that they are not all powerful and didn't accomplish everything by themselves. That was my interpretation on the poem so if you have any other opinions/ideas just comment.

Poem?

Look at that Gucci Mane
mony like Obama
flying those fast airplanes
don't need more of that drama

Rappin' with some new tech
from twothousand ten
spending only half his check
to buy that brand new Benz

Believing in equality
in this modern day
getting money so quickly
you wish you had his pay

Poem

On a computer there was much to be done
But losing his money was not one.
He was losing his lifes goal
When he found someone with a plan
Who said he could find the mole
So they hoped onto a computer
That picture on the desktop could not have been cuter
It was a dog blocking a cat from his bed
And he notice he had to go one step ahead.
He quickly hacked into the bank
And transferred his money to Fort Knox
The man he quickly did thank.
Then he caught the thief robbing the bank
And made him walk a stainless steal plank.

My poem

You got money
You got love
You even say you got a boy whos up above
You got what you want
But do you really?
You got your drugs
that alcohol too
Wheres the education
Bestowed on you
TTYL thats all for now
I'll get to you some how.
But if I can't
You've lost your load
Cause not even the devil
Is that cold

Reflection on British Literature A and Goals for B

As we enter into another class, what are some of your thoughts about your personal performances in British Literature A?  What do you hope to improve?  What can I help you with?  What are your goals for British Literature B?
